A man who laced treats with sleeping medication and provided them to youngsters at a summer camp in the region has confessed to sexual offenses against two young males both between nine and ten.

The accused was arrested after eight children and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at the courthouse on Friday.

However, he refused to admit one particular crime he was accused of, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was held in detention prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Treat game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, outlined the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to ingest treats "rapidly".

She told the court the man had played this game with the young males "for many years", and minors had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "This year his stepchild had suspicions about the situation, with valid cause.

"They chose" to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC stated materials including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the police about his worries.

She explained the man proceeded to engage in the "sweet game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the next day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she added.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was reviewing the police response of the incident.

The legal representative said the minors were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement once more.

She explained the man then played the "candy game" in a space of five minors.
