The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific calls from the official, following the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
